Edict of Milan (extra credit)

The reign of Constantine is certainly an important turning point in the history of Rome and in the history of the church. Please read through the Edict of Milan. Cite one line that particularly well shows a way in which Constantine changes things for the church.

  1. "Worship should know that it has pleased us to remove all conditions whatsoever, which were in the rescripts formerly given to you officially, concerning the Christians and now any one of these who wishes to observe Christian religion may do so freely and openly, without molestation."

Saying that Christianity is openly and freely expressed throughout Rome, and that their will be not consequences for believing religion or being a Christian.

  2. "worship should know...., without molestation

Christianity was a little like a wild fire in August, it just needed a spark. the Edict initiated this spark by letting christians practice in the open it allowed the faith to grow rapidly.

  3. We thought it fit to commend these things most fully to your care that you may know that we have given to those Christians free and unrestricted opportunity of religious worship.

Making it able for Christians to be able to practice their religion freely is a great thing that he did for the Church and Christians.

  4. And thus by this wholesome counsel and most upright provision we thought to arrange that no one whatsoever should be denied the opportunity to give his heart to the observance of the Christian religion, of that religion which he should think best for himself

I like this line because it basically gives anyone the "right" to worship not only Christ but any religion that they choose without repercussions

  6. "we thought to arrange that no one whatsoever should be denied the opportunity to give his heart to the observance of the Christian religion, of that religion which he should think best for himself, so that the Supreme Deity, to whose worship we freely yield our hearts may show in all things His usual favor and benevolence. Therefore, your Worship should know that it has pleased us to remove all conditions whatsoever, which were in the rescripts formerly given to you officially, concerning the Christians and now any one of these who wishes to observe Christian religion may do so freely and openly,

This quote shows us that Constantine is bringing a time of Christianity to Rome. Rome had once been a place of Christian persecution and murder but now with the reign of Constantine, Christians are welcomed into Rome with religious freedom and are encouraged to follow the church of Christ which changed Rome and the western world forever.
